Aces coach issues statement on altercation during Fever game

Becky Hammon and the Las Vegas suffered a 99-89 loss to the Indiana Fever in Game 2 on Tuesday. The home team played inspired basketball to extend the series to a winner-take-all Game 3. However, an incident in the fourth quarter involving a fan and A’ja Wilson garnered a lot of attention.

Caitlin Clark spearheaded Indiana’s attack with 27 points, seven rebounds and a playoff career-high 15 assists. She shot 9-of-18 from the field and recorded five three-pointers. Kelsey Mitchell chipped in 26 points, while Aliyah Boston supplied 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting, with four rebounds and five assists.

Wilson, on the other hand, registered 22 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Hammon’s team was led by Jackie Young’s game-high 31 points, along with four rebounds and five assists.

Becky Hammon addressed fan incident after Las Vegas Aces loss to Indiana Fever

Hammon addressed the media after the game and talked about the exchange between Wilson and the fan. It happened with 4:10 left in the fourth quarter and Las Vegas trailing 90-79. The officials assessed the superstar forward with a technical foul while security removed the fan from his seat.

“There’s rules and procedures,” Hammon said. “I think there’s a certain etiquette both players and fans need to abide by. Clearly, some lines get crossed. And it seems to happen here. I can’t speak specifically to what was said or what was done. I could speak to the character of our players and stuff that they deal with. The disrespect, whether that’s a word or an action, a gesture, should be addressed appropriately. That’s not my job. It’s the job of this arena. I assume they’re following protocol.”

Las Vegas and Indiana will clash in Game 3 at Michelob Ultra Arena on Thursday. The winner will advance to the next round to face either the No. 2-seeded Golden State Valkyries or the No. 7-seeded Dallas Wings.
