Chicago Bears opponent Aaron Glenn

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has plenty of experience with Aaron Glenn. The pair worked side-by-side on the Detroit Lions together. Now, Johnson will be facing off against Glenn and his New York Jets in Week 4.

Now a head coach, Glenn is still trying to help the Jets get back into contention. But their work on the defensive side has been evident. Entering Week 4, New York ranks second in total defense, allowing 258.3 yards per game.

Johnson is well aware of what makes Glenn a special coach. He remembers their practice sessions together, and his then-defensive coordinator counterpart celebrating after big plays. Furthermore, Johnson can’t forget the fire Glenn lit underneath every defender.

The Bears head coach may know his opponent well. But he knows that won’t make the Week 4 challenge any easier.

While Johnson may have an idea on Glenn’s tendencies, things are much different with the Jets than they were the Lions. Plus, he’s noticed New York throwing out numerous different schemes through the first three games. Johnson is preparing their team to be ready to adjust when necessary, via the head coach’s Tuesday press conference.

“Tremendous amount of respect for him as a coach, a former player, as a man,” Johnson said. “He commands respect from everybody in that locker room. I know how the people felt about him in Detroit. I can imagine it’s very similar in New York from everything I can gather.

“He’s doing a fantastic job as far as I’m concerned,” he continued. “This is a team that’s really close to winning a lot of football games. This is a big week for us. You can see how he played the game as a player has translated to how he coaches. His guys take that same identity as well. He’s a heck of a competitor.”

The Bears still don’t know who will be playing quarterback in Week 4. But whoever does can’t take the Jets lightly no matter their past history. Glenn has New York playing strong out the gate despite their 1-2 record.

Week 4 will give the former Lions coordinators an opportunity to go head-to-head. Johnson relishes the opportunity but understands how much work will be required to succeed.
