Caleb Williams put the NFL on notice during the last half of the regular season last year, leading the Chicago Bears to improbable comebacks, including crunch-time throws against the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams in the postseason.
With the rest of the league on alert for the Bears, the element of surprise is more or less gone for second-year head coach Ben Johnson, and the team needs to see more consistency from Williams during the upcoming season.

Albert Beer of Sports Illustrated made a note of where every team in the league stands before training camp, and he suggested the Bears are trying to make a point to Williams this offseason that he can operate the offense with more simplicity.
“One of the best quotes of the spring to help frame the summer and fall came from Bears QBs coach J.T. Barrett, who said that his goal this offseason was to show Caleb Williams that, ‘We don’t have to work as hard for our money.’
“Last summer, Ben Johnson, Declan Doyle and Barrett fed Williams through a fire hose, beating him down with information to build him back up. This summer, I bet we’ll see more of the easy-money things Barrett references, to show the quarterback he doesn’t need to do as much of the spectacular to play winning football.”
One thing I noticed from the offense last year was the Bears would allow Williams to let it fly early in drives while he led the team down the field only to play more conservative in the red zone, opting to run the ball near the goal line.
Maybe if Johnson trusts Williams to take a simpler approach in the red zone, he’ll keep the ball in the hands of the 2024 No. 1 pick in the game’s most important moments.
