WNBA facing major backlash after controversial Caitlin Clark decision

There was no shortage of action in Monday’s game between the Indiana Fever and the Phoenix Mercury. Unsurprisingly, Clark found herself in the middle of one of the most contentious moments of the matchup.

At around the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter, Mercury star Alyssa Thomas was called for an offensive foul for extending her elbow and making contact with Clark. Phoenix called a timeout to challenge the call.

After reviewing the play, the referees decided to overturn Thomas’ foul. They changed the call to a defensive foul on Clark because she supposedly initiated the contact.

This resulted in Clark’s fifth personal foul, and the Fever were charged a timeout.

Fans call out WNBA over overturned Caitlin Clark call

The fans on social media were not at all pleased with the unexpected turn of events. They did not hide their frustration as they called out the WNBA for what they believe was another horrible decision involving Clark.

“Corrupt absolutely corrupt,” a comment on X read.

“I honestly am questioning the integrity of the game,” another said.

“@WNBA you’re working hard on losing even more viewership,” a user wrote.

“Ridiculous. The @wnba refs are still a joke,” a reaction read.

“That might be the worst call of any basketball game this year!” declared another.

“@WNBA come on now! Do better! This is so obvious! What a joke ” a fan wrote.

The good news for Clark and Co. is that they were still able to secure the win. The Mercury put up a fight, but the Fever held on to score a much-needed 86-77 victory.

Indiana improved to 10-7 after snapping their two-game losing streak. They will aim to make it two wins in a row on Wednesday in a rematch against the Mercury at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
