Chicago Cubs go all-in for trade with Mets: Report

Amid numerous injuries to the pitching rotation and news that Justin Steele was not expected to return to the starting rotation this season, the Chicago Cubs needed to make a trade to add help before the deadline on Aug. 3.
On Wednesday, the Cubs made a trade weeks before the deadline and hours after beating the New York Mets 10-5 (the second win over the Mets in as many days) to improve to 43-37.
Per Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Cubs traded for left-handed pitcher David Peterson of the Mets on Wednesday night.
“Trade news: The Chicago Cubs are acquiring left-hander David Peterson from the New York Mets, sources tell ESPN,” Passan posted on X.
“The Cubs desperately need starting-pitching help, and they’ll get a big leaguer in Peterson who has a 6.09 ERA this season. He’s got a 3.85 FIP, however, and 51.1% groundball rate — and going from the Mets’ infield defense to the best-in-MLB Cubs’ could be huge for Peterson.”

The Mets are expected to hit the sell button on a lot of players before the deadline as the team sits at the bottom of the National League East with a 34-46 record despite having the MLB’s second-highest payroll.
Peterson was a contributor to the slow start for the Mets. More moves are expected to follow for New York.
“Peterson had lost his spot in New York’s rotation and will be a free agent after the season,” Passan wrote. “Just how much of a sell-off the Mets engage in will be one of the big stories leading up to the Aug. 3 deadline. But this is the first piece, and rival executives expect plenty more.”
Peterson needed a fresh start and could do better on the Cubs, who are tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for second place in the NL Central and seven games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers.
