Chicago Cubs: Dansby Swanson makes MLB history amid torrid hitting stretch

The Chicago Cubs have won five games in a row and nine of their last ten as they have finally started to look like the contenders most everyone thought they would be in 2026. Earlier this year, they had two different 10-game winnings streaks, but those were nearly forgotten after a terrible month of May and a 10-game losing streak.

Throughout it all, manager Craig Counsell decided to stick with Dansby Swanson nearly every day at shortstop. Up until recently, the Gold Glover was struggling mightily at the plate, unable to keep his batting average above the Mendoza Line.

Lately, though, Swanson has put on an offensive display that is rivaled by very few in the annals of Major League history.

On Wednesday, the Cubs defeated the San Diego Padres 23-3. They tied a franchise record with eight home runs, three of which were hit by Swanson. On Tuesday, he had hit two home runs, meaning he has back-to-back multi-home run games.

In fact, the recent stretch Swanson has been on has put him in some pretty exclusive company:

As one can see, Swanson has eight home runs and 25 RBI in his last 13 games. The only shortstop in Major League Baseball history to have matched that feat was Troy Tulowitzki.

Swanson’s recent hot stretch has greatly improved his overall stat line for the season. He is now hitting .210/.300/.431 with 16 home runs and 57 RBI.
