Chicago Cubs predicted to land multiple pitchers from NL disappointment ahead of 2026 MLB trade deadline

The Chicago Cubs are 57-45 on the season, which is tied for the fifth-best record in all Major League Baseball. However, they are currently seven games back of first place in the National League Central Division. While they do hold the National League’s top Wild Card spot, the fact of the matter is that they are treading water.

It is true, admittedly, that Chicago has been playing excellent baseball, overall, as of late. However, as the season progresses, pitching will become more and more important. This is especially true when the postseason starts in October, and the fact of the matter is that the Cubs’ pitching staff has been decimated by injuries all year long.

There have been many rumors over the last several months linking the Cubs to New York Mets ace Freddy Peralta. They have also been linked to Clay Holmes and various Mets relievers.

CBS Sports thinks that Chicago could get more than one of them from the struggling Mets:

“Earlier this month, the Cubs had a full 13-man pitching staff on the injured list. They expect to get some of those guys back soon-ish, but not all of them, so pitching reinforcements are a must at the deadline. The ready-to-sell Mets could own the pitching market thanks to their rental starters (Clay Holmes, Freddy Peralta), rental relievers (A.J. Minter, Brooks Raley), and controllable relievers (Huascar Brazoban, Luke Weaver). The Cubs and Mets are a trade partner match made in deadline heaven.”

The only issue facing Chicago and acquiring any high-profile talent is that the Cubs lack the number of quality prospects selling teams would want. Unfortunately, Chicago’s farm system is ranked just 24th in baseball, and they can get out-bid rather easily by other MLB teams.

That being said, several additions need to be made if the Cubs are to make a deep run in the postseason. It will be interesting to see how the MLB trade deadline shakes out and what talent Chicago is able to add.
