Bears backup Tyson Bagent’s firm stance on starting in NFL

When it comes to Chicago Bears quarterbacks, all eyes are on Caleb Williams. But the franchise still feels strongly about backup Tyson Bagent, awarding him a two-year, $10 million contract extension in 2025.

Bagent has no qualms about being Williams’ backup, he understands the privilege of playing for the Bears. But the quarterback still has lofty goals in the NFL. Ultimately, Bagent wants the opportunity to be a starter at the highest level, via Dan Wiederer of the Athletic.

“I do feel all those things,” Bagent acknowledges. “As I get older, I know there’s a time limit on this whole thing. And I am itching, even maybe a little more, to get in the game.”

“I want everything the league can offer me while I’m here,” he continued. “I’ll never be closer than I am right now. I’m not gonna sit here and tell you I want to be a second- and third-string quarterback for the rest of my career.”

Tyson Bagent’s career so far in Chicago

Since his arrival to Chicago in 2023, Bagent has made 12 appearances for the franchise, starting four games. He went 2-2 as a starter, and has completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 917 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions.

While his numbers don’t jump off the page, Bagent was a rookie when he won a pair of games for the Bears. He entered that season as an undrafted free agent from DII Shepherd University. That will make an impact on any team in need of a quarterback.

As will the fact he is now entering his second year under head coach Ben Johnson. Most of Johnson’s focus goes into developing Williams. But Bagent is right there in lock step, learning the same techniques. Numerous Johnson disciples have been poached at the coaching ranks. It wouldn’t be shocking to see a QB-needy team take the same approach with Bagent.

It’s unclear if the Bears would really trade their backup. They do have veteran Case Keenum on the roster, but Bagent has clearly made an impression on the franchise.

Still, sooner than later, the quarterback wants to be an NFL starter. As he sits behind Williams, Bagent will do everything in his power to prepare for that opportunity.
