Sophie Cunningham calls out Fever after win against Liberty

Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever began another winning streak. Their victory over the New York Liberty marked their second straight, as they bounced back strong from a two-game skid.

The veteran guard put her previous struggles behind her, managing just eight total points in three games. She posted 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from downtown. Her solid game on Tuesday supported Kelsey Mitchell’s game-high 28 points and Caitlin Clark’s historic 22-point, 11-assist double-double.

However, she knows that the team still needs to make a lot of tweaks to strengthen its championship bid. Indiana entered the season as one of the title favorites but started 5-5. The Fever have since turned their fortunes around and now hold a record of 21-12.

Sophie Cunningham wants the Fever to improve their third quarter showing

Cunningham criticized her team for not starting the third quarter strong. She wants everyone to step up on offense to avoid slow starts after halftime.

“I think we had great defense, one and done pretty much, and then our pace on offense was nice,” Cunningham said. “I think overall tonight, the way we shared the ball was amazing, but we got to come out better in the third quarter. We’re just slow. Our offense is slow. Defense wasn’t bad, but we just got to figure out that third quarter.”

The Missouri product emphasized that their ball movement was great and gave a shoutout to her teammates. She described it as “amazing” and called their offensive pace as “nice.”

Cunningham and Indiana will aim to sustain the momentum when they take on the Dallas Wings on Friday. It’s the second of a two-game homestand before they go on the road to play four consecutive matchups away from home. They will start on Sunday versus the Atlanta Dream before facing the Toronto Tempo two days later.
