During his Week 3 postgame press conference, Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson took what many believed was a shot at Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff. The comment came when Johnson was asked about game planning for backup quarterback Case Keenum.
Chicago’s head coach noted that he has experience calling plays for non-mobile quarterbacks in the past. Working formerly as the Lions offensive coordinator, Johnson was obviously talking about Goff.

Goff and Johnson enjoyed plenty of success in Detroit. Furthermore, the quarterback’s career has been fully rejuvenated on the Lions. While he may not be the most mobile – and compared to starter Caleb Williams, not many are – Johnson knows Goff is still an elite quarterback.
Which is why the Lions star didn’t see it as a true dig. Both sides still hashed out the comment though, as their friendly rivalry inside the NFC North rages on.

Johnson made sure Goff to explain his side of the comment. There was no bad blood in the message. The quarterback understood right away, and it’s now water under the bridge. But Goff may hit Johnson with a “dig” of his own down the line, via the St. Brown podcast.
“I know there was no ill intent to that. He seems to be a lightning rod for them, they pick up everything he says,” Goff said. “He called me this morning like, ‘Dude, you know that means nothing.’ I’m like, ‘Yea dude, you’re good, no worries. Don’t worry about it.”
“I’ll have to throw something his way, where I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, whatever, play caller, blah blah blah. And then I’ll call him and be like, ‘Dude, you know I’m just kidding,’” he continued.
“(Ben) called me this morning and was like ‘Dude, you know that means nothing.'”

The Bears’ first matchup with the Lions in 2026 will come on the road in Week 12. They’ll then host Detroit for the rematch in Week 17. Based on where both teams want to be, both gams should have serious playoff implications.
As they fight to win the NFC North, both Johnson and Goff are sure to have plenty of sound bites. But behind the scenes, the head coach and quarterback still remain tight.
