Major Kyler Gordon update drops as Chicago Bears open practice window

The Chicago Bears recently moved to 2-1, following an impressive 27-7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

This Sunday, they’ll host the New York Jets at Soldier Field, hoping to win their third game of the young season. An encouraging part of the Eagles’ victory was Chicago’s defense, which has looked very good over the past two weeks.

They shut down Jalen Hurts and company and put on their best defensive performance of the season. Rookies Dillon Thieneman and Malik Muhammad looked great once again, as this young secondary has improved since their Week 1 collapse.

A major part of this secondary is DB Kyler Gordon, who has been on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list since Week 1. Fortunately for the Bears, his return could be around the corner, as his 21-day window to practice was opened today.

A week ago, Bears head coach Ben Johnson was asked about Gordon’s availability. He responded by saying, “I have nothing to add there.”

It wasn’t the most promising response, as many speculated he could continue to miss time. And make no mistake: just because his practice window is open, that doesn’t mean his return is imminent. He could be out for a majority of this season, but he will need to practice within the next three weeks to avoid a season-long IR stint.

With the Chicago Bears defense looking solid, will they welcome Kyler Gordon back with open arms?

Even with the two-week turnaround, this Chicago Bears defense is still a question mark.

They’ve been getting to the quarterback with greater frequency, but the secondary is still young and vulnerable. Veteran DB Jaylon Johnson has looked better in the past few weeks, but still not up to the standard that many expect.

Gordon is one of the better nickelbacks in the NFL, and the Bears are patiently awaiting his return. While his rehab has caused a bit of confusion (He’s doing it away from the team), his impact on this secondary cannot be understated.

If the Bears want to continue gaining momentum on defense, Kyler Gordon is a needed piece.
