Early in the offseason, there were rumblings defensive tackle Gervon Dexter wanted a hefty pay raise via a new contract from the Chicago Bears before the regular season.
Nothing transpired between the Bears and Dexter, and Chicago traded the 2023 second-round pick to the Atlanta Falcons for cornerback Clark Phillips III and a 2027 fifth-round pick.
On Wednesday, the Falcons and former Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham, now the GM of the Atlanta, gave Dexter the pay day he was asking for this year. Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Atlanta agreed to a four-year, $78 million contract extension.
“The Falcons and DT Gervon Dexter have agreed to a 4-year, $78M contract extension with $46.5M guaranteed, per sources,” Schultz posted on X. “Atlanta acquired Dexter from Chicago before the season, and he has been elite with a 20.5% pressure rate, ranking among the NFL’s top-10.
“Falcons GM Ian Cunningham helped draft Gervon Dexter in Chicago, traded for him as GM in Atlanta, and now extends him.”
Dexter has appeared in three games but has made no starts for the Falcons this season. He’s recorded seven tackles, three quarterback hits, and .5 sacks for the 1-2 Falcons.
The Bears were never going to agree to a $78 million extension for Dexter, who had the second-highest sack total on their defense in 2025 with six sacks.

How has the trade worked out for Chicago so far?
The Bears have gotten decent production from defensive tackles Kentavius Street (one sack) and Neville Gallimore. Phillips has appeared in three games but has made no starts or stats on defense despite the defense having depth issues at cornerback.
Clark hasn’t played a snap on defense and has played 14 snaps (18%) on special teams.
Chicago still has the Day 3 pick to play with.
Good on Dexter for believing in himself and getting a new deal, but it was time for Chicago to part ways with the defensive tackle.
