Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) talks to Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White

Stephanie White only got 13 games out of Caitlin Clark last season as the Indiana Fever superstar battled multiple injuries throughout the campaign.

Clark played in her 17th game of the season on Wednesday, but she was unable to finish the contest. The two-time All-Star left the game in the third quarter and was unable to return. She tweaked her back in the second quarter, forcing the Fever to ultimately rule her out for the remainder of the contest.

The Fever lost to the Phoenix Mercury at home, 111-109.

As of this writing, the severity of Clark’s injuries is unknown. However, given that the 24-year-old has been dealing with a back issue for nearly the entire season, it’s possible that she misses time due to this unfortunate development.

Stephanie White says Indiana Fever will take cautious approach on Caitlin Clark

Coach White was fuming in her postgame interview. She called out the referees for their officiating in Wednesday’s game.

Clark’s injury came after she was fouled on a three-point attempt. Her defender encroached on her landing space, causing Clark to fall to the ground. White wasn’t at all pleased that no flagrant foul was called on the dangerous play.

The veteran coach then explained that the Fever will need to take a cautious approach with Clark, prioritizing her long-term health.

“I think we gotta be careful, it’s a long season,” White said.We gotta make sure that she’s healthy.”

White went on to call on guard Tyasha Harris and Raven Johnson, who will need to step up if Clark is forced to miss time.

“As far as adjustments, it’s next player up,” White said. “[Harris] has gotta be ready to play some more minutes. Obviously, Raven has to be ready. We’ve gotta take on a little bit more collectively.

“I think (we need to) find ways to get our bigs a little bit more involved. Specifically, we think about Mo (Billings) and her ability to get some shots off the move. Get her into two-man a little bit more.”

White and the Fever have been in this situation before. Whether they like it or not, Indiana might need to navigate the next few games without their cornerstone superstar.

“This is, unfortunately, not unfamiliar territory for some of the players on our team,” WHite said. “But everybody’s a pro, and everybody’s gotta be ready to go.”
