Chicago Cubs get exciting injury updates on 2 shelved starting pitchers

The Chicago Cubs are 61-47 and six games back of first place in the National League Central Division. With the MLB trade deadline quickly approaching, Chicago is one of the teams everyone is certain will attempt to make a substantial move to improve their current roster.

In terms of need, there is no question that the Cubs are in desperate need of starting pitching. The only real question, at this point, is whether or not Chicago will attempt to nab one of the biggest names on the market or acquire multiple less expensive targets.

Fortunately, the answer is going to be compounded with the hopeful return of a couple of their own starting pitchers.

The Chicago Cubs get positive injury updates on Justin Steele and Edward Cabrera

In a recent report that detailed how the Cubs are now in the market for two-time AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, it was also revealed that the team has positive injury updates on Justin Steele and Edward Cabrera:

“Cabrera is scheduled to make the first of three minor-league rehab starts on Friday with Triple-A Iowa. Steele is expected to do a light bullpen session this weekend at Wrigley Field.”

Cabrera is currently on the injured list again due to a hamstring/adductor strain. In 14 starts for the Cubs this year, he is 5-4 with a 5.10 ERA. While his numbers do not suggest that he has been overly effective for Chicago this year, he has a history of turning it on down the stretch. At this point, too, the Cubs could use him in any capacity.

Steele has been out for the entire season due his recovery, and set back, from last year’s arm injury. The team has already decided that he will not be used as a starter in the event he is able to return late in the season. That being said, the bullpen is a mess and he sure would be useful as a reliever.
