Tarik Skubal. Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are looking for starting pitching help ahead of the trade deadline on Monday, and the Detroit Tigers have reportedly sent an offer for what it would take to acquire Tarik Skubal.

There has been chatter that the Cubs could look to trade with the Tigers for Skubal, who has a 2.79 ERA with 116 strikeouts this season in 96.2 innings pitched. Still, most MLB insiders don’t think there is a real likelihood Chicago could pull off a trade with Detroit.

Per longtime sports journalist George Ofman, the Cubs have done their due diligence on Skubal. The Tigers are asking for a steep price. They want three major league players and a prospect like pitcher Ben Brown to give up Skubal.

“Yes, the Cubs inquired about Skubal,” Ofman posted on X. “The Tigers want 3 major league players plus a prospect which includes Ben Brown. Highly doubtful they can outbid the Dodgers and maybe two other teams.”

Chicago has every reason to want to trade for Skubal. The Cubs are 61-47, but six games back from the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central. Given the injuries to the rotation, the Cubs could become World Series contenders with an ace on the mound.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan named Skubal as the best fit for the Cubs, though he thinks they’d have to get creative to land a pitcher given their depth.

“The Cubs don’t have the prospect depth of the Dodgers, Brewers, and Rays and have no intentions of dealing outfielder Josiah Hartshorn,” Passan wrote.

“Can a combination of multiple young bats and right-hander Jaxon Wiggins be enough to land the prize? Chicago is going to be creative — with Ayers on the cusp, the Cubs have talked about Carson Kelly with teams seeking a right-handed-hitting catcher.”

In a few days, we’ll see how serious the Cubs are about competing for the World Series this fall.
