Bears coach Ben Johnson addresses team decision before Eagles game

The Chicago Bears are coming off a disappointing Week 2 performance against the Minnesota Vikings. They struggled to put points on the board and their special teams also did not perform as expected. It led to head coach Ben Johnson and his staff to bring veteran long snapper Scott Daly back, which he addressed ahead of Monday’s matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Chicago lost 9-3, a week after flexing its offensive firepower in the 59-37 win over the Carolina Panthers. However, things turned from bad to worse as Caleb Williams suffered a hamstring injury in the fourth quarter. He exited, didn’t return and is in danger of missing the team’s Week 3 game. The star quarterback finished with 15-of-26 completions for 138 yards against one interception.

During his media availability on Friday, Johnson shared the reason why the team signed Daly again. He highlighted the 32-year-old’s reliability and the experience he’ll bring to Chicago young roster.

“Scott’s a dependable, reliable piece,” Johnson said. “He loved being here. When you have a young long snapper, there sometimes are some growing pains, and we’re experiencing those. We just felt like it was the right thing to do for our team at that time.”

Daly entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He spent the first three years of his pro career with the Detroit Lions before landing with the Bears in 2024. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish product played two seasons for the franchise, appearing in 34 regular-season games. He suited up for the New Orleans Saints last year.

Chicago is looking to get back on track with a win over the Eagles. However, it won’t be easy as Williams will likely miss the game along with Tyson Bagent, who is dealing with concussion symptoms. The team is expected to name Case Keenum as its QB1.
