Chicago Bears: Doctors now admit Caleb Williams’ injury is much worse

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson told reporters earlier in the week he wasn’t ruling out Caleb Williams before playing the Philadelphia Eagles on “Monday Night Football” in Week 3 as the quarterback deals with a hamstring strain.

Turns out, Williams is dealing with a much worse hamstring strain than was originally thought when Johnson made those comments.

The Bears seemed to suggest Williams would be back sooner rather than later, meaning his hamstring strain was a Grade 1. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported the Bears had optimism that Williams had a Grade 1 strain.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Williams actually has a Grade 2 hamstring strain, and doctors now say he could miss four to six weeks.

“This doesn’t mean that Williams, whom the Bears have touted as a quick healer, couldn’t return sooner than that timeline,” Schefter wrote. “It just means that doctors believe this type of injury normally takes three to four weeks of recovery and that is the doctors’ best estimation of how long it could take Williams to recover.”

Whether the Bears place Williams on injured reserve before playing the Eagles will be a big tell.

Last week, Johnson suggested that Williams was a fast healer, and could be back on the field quickly.

“Here’s what I know. This guy’s a little bit different than the average human being,” Johnson said of Williams. “I said that last night, I’ll double down on that.

“He gets back — he has in the past — a lot faster than what people can anticipate, and so I’m not putting a timeline on this. We’re going to say week-to-week. He’s going to attack this with everything that he knows.”

In the meantime, backup quarterback Tyson Bagent is still in the concussion protocol before Monday night’s game. Case Keenum would be in line to start if Bagent cannot play.
