Chicago Bears: Case Keenum sounds off after ‘MNF’ win over Eagles

Chicago Bears quarterback Case Keenum hadn’t made a start since Christmas Eve in 2023.

It didn’t look like he missed a beat on Monday night.

The Bears were down to their third-string quarterback after Caleb Williams suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2 that will keep him week-to-week.

Chicago made Tyson Bagent the backup for its “Monday Night Football” contest against the Philadelphia Eagles after he cleared the concussion protocol on Sunday but was not up to speed with the game plan.

Keenum went 24 of 34 passing for 247 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears’ 27-7 win over the Eagles in front of 59,588 fans at Soldier Field. He added a touchdown on the ground via a quarterback sneak to put the game away in the fourth quarter.

Chicago took advantage of three Eagles’ turnovers to pull off the upset and improve to 2-1.

Chicago Bears QB Case Keenum thankful for opportunity

When speaking on the ESPN broadcast postgame, Keenum praised Bears head coach Ben Johnson for “cooking” up a great game plan for him to execute.

“I really don’t have any words,” Keenum said. “There’s so much emotion, so much that went into this week. Man, these guys that I play with in this locker room, it’s incredible.

“I mean, there’s Ben Johnson (who) was cooking tonight. He was in his bag. The guys made huge plays down the field. O line blocked their tails off. I mean, got to give the Eagles credit. Heck of a team coming in here, but golly, we responded, and it was so much fun.”

Keenum wasn’t expected to see the field this season. He’s been a mentor to Williams and Bagent. He was thankful for the opportunity to make one more start.

 “Just an incredible opportunity,” Keenum said. “I love this city. This Texas boy loves Chicago, and this is a cool spot. So, gonna celebrate this one tonight.”

It remains to be seen if the Bears will start Keenum in Week 5 when they play the New York Jets if Williams is unable to play. But he made a statement to Johnson that he can carry the team, leading the Bears over a previously unbeaten Eagles’ team.
