Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has not participated in the first two practices of the week as he recovers from a Grade 2 hamstring injury he suffered in Week 2’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

The Bears have been mum as to whether they’d give Case Keenum another start after he led Chicago to a 27-7 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on “Monday Night Football” in Week 3 after Tyson Bagent missed practice last week due to a concussion suffered against the Vikings.

Per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Bears appear ready to make a change at quarterback before Sunday’s game at the New York Jets. Bagent has been getting the reps with the first-team during practice this week.

“That said, it’s hard to keep the many people who are present for practice from saying something to someone who is trying to find out who’s getting the work,” Florio wrote. “As we hear it, Tyson Bagent (not Case Keenum) has gotten the first-team reps so far this week.”

Why the Chicago Bears would turn to Tyson Bagent

Keenum was hot against the Eagles defense on Monday night, throwing for 247 yards and two touchdowns against a unit that appeared prepared to play the run. The Jets have had a week to dissect game film on Keenum, and the Bears would not have the same element of surprise if he started on Sunday.

As we discussed earlier in the week, the Bears have strategic reasons to want to start Bagent, an undrafted rookie they signed in 2023. He has not made a start in the league since his rookie season. He went 2-2 when Justin Fields was sidelined with an injury.

The Bears can up Bagent’s market value before the trade deadline on Nov. 10 by playing him during Williams’ absence. Bagent is considered one of the better backups in the league, but he hasn’t had enough playing time in recent years to back up that claim.

Bagent believes he can be a starter in the league. If he gets an opportunity against the Jets, Bagent will be motivated to play his best football. That could help the Bears win and give Bagent an opportunity to show quarterback-needy teams around the league what he has to offer.
