The Chicago Bears have officially activated cornerback Kyler Gordon off of the Physically Unable to Perform list. But he still has some hurdles to cross before making his full return. One of them being having to sit at least one more game due to being on the PUP in the first place.
Gordon missed the entire offseason program rehabbing his calf injury. He sought outside, and sometimes controversial medical help. For a long time, Gordon’s status was shrouded in mystery.
At least back at practice, the Bears can begin envisioning what their defense looks like with Gordon back at nickel. Chicago has gotten impressive play from rookie Malik Muhammad, putting the team 12th in pass defense (207 yards per game) entering Week 4. If Gordon can return to form, the Bears will look to rise up those rankings.

While he was working out on his own, Gordon has been away from the facility for a lengthy amount of time. Chicago wants to see exactly what they have in the cornerback. That includes defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who has laid out Gordon’s next steps towards his return, via CHGO.
“He’s got to ramp up and really get himself into football shape,” Allen said. “We did a little extra work with him yesterday. I thought he looked good. The way he went out there and practiced was good to see. He moved around really well. The biggest thing is taking a bit of time to get him into football shape.”
“We’ll do that,” he continued. “We’ve got 21 days to figure it out and make a decision. We’ll use whatever time we need to to evaluate where he’s at. Hopefully he’ll be ready sooner rather than later. He’s a player that can help us.”

Over his 45 games with the Bears, Gordon has put up 214 tackles, 17 passes defended and five interceptions. It wasn’t long ago that Chicago gave the defensive back a contract extension that made him the highest paid slot cornerback in the league.
The Bears fully believe in what Gordon brings to the defense, they just need him on the field to make an impact. He is now inching closer to that regular season return.
