Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever were back on the court on Wednesday for a rematch against the Phoenix Mercury.

This was the second time these two teams faced off in three days, following a feisty encounter on Monday. The Fever came out on top in that one, 86-77, but the win did not come without incident.

Clark received a technical foul for an altercation with Mercury veteran and former teammate DeWanna Bonner. The Fever star said after the game that the tech was for instigating the scuffle.

Players from both teams got involved, resulting in multiple technical fouls. Fever forward Myisha Hines-Allen was ejected less than a minute after the incident in an ensuing altercation.

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark suffers injury vs. Phoenix Mercury

There was no love lost between the two teams in Wednesday’s rematch. The game was physical from the get-go, as both sides did what they could to gain an advantage.

Clark was on the receiving end of some physicality from the Mercury. At one point, Phoenix star Alyssa Thomas was seen seemingly driving her fist toward Clark’s throat as the Fever star fell on the ground.

The two-time WNBA All-Star also suffered a contentious foul in the second quarter, where she appeared to tweak her back. Clark was able to play through the issue, but was forced to check out of the game at the 5:15 mark of the third quarter. She went back to the locker room and was unable to return.

The Fever then announced some unfortunate news.

“Injury Update: Caitlin Clark (back) will not return to tonight’s game,” the team posted on X.

The severity of Clark’s injury is currently unknown. However, it is serious enough that she will sit out the rest of Wednesday’s contest.

It is worth noting that Clark has been dealing with a back issue all season long. She missed one game earlier in the season and has since been constantly listed on the injury report for each game.

The Fever should provide an update on Clark’s status after the game. As of this writing, the Mercury are up, 98-96, with 4:22 remaining in the fourth quarter.
