Fever coach Stephanie White speaks out on allegations against WNBA commissioner

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White is well aware of the latest controversy involving WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert.

The high-ranking league official was dragged into the mud by Phoenix Mercury star Alyssa Thomas, who alleged that Engelbert had not reached out to her after Thomas had received death threats from angry fans. This development came after the Mercury veteran was issued a one-game suspension for driving her fist into Caitlin Clark’s neck during their game on Wednesday.

Thomas called out Engelbert and the WNBA for failing to protect players in such perilous situations.

For her part, Engelbert issued a statement saying that the WNBA’s front office has taken the necessary security precautions. She also vehemently condemned any and all forms of hate directed to the players.

While White did not directly call Engelbert out, the Fever coach spoke openly about accountability and consistent dialogue.

“I think obviously when there’s a lack of communication, the void is filled with negativity, right?” White said. “I think being able to communicate, being able to be the one who reaches out first is important.

“So, yeah, I’m sure. If I was in that situation, I would have wanted to hear from the league.”

White further emphasized her point by highlighting the importance of human connection.

“Look, none of us can control social media,” White continued. “The things that we can do to minimize it, some of us are in a better position than others. … But continuing to put whatever we can in place, I think, to support, to help.

“And then from a human standpoint, checking on one another. Checking on one another is important, too.”

White and the Fever are in the midst of a seven-day break. Their next game isn’t until Sunday when they travel to Nevada to face the defending champions, the Las Vegas Aces, at T-Mobile Arena.
