The Chicago Cubs are 50-40 on the season and just six games back of first place in the National League Central Division. One must really credit the grit the team has shown so far in 2026. They have had to overcome seemingly insurmountable injury blows all season long, yet are in a position, once again, to compete for a postseason spot.
It has not been a very consistent season. While there have been long winning streaks, there has also been a long losing streak, and Chicago went an entire month without winning a single series.
There is no question that they are capable of being one of the best teams in the Majors, but can they play like one on a regular basis?

Last week, Bleacher Report had the Cubs ranked seventh in their weekly MLB power rankings. This week, they have put them up a spot to sixth, but issue a serious question regarding the rest of the season:
“If you slept through the first 85 games of the season and happened to start watching Cubs games just in time for them to consecutively smoke the Padres 23-3 and get stomped 17-1 by the Cardinals this past week, well, that was the 2026 Chicago Cubs in a nutshell.
“There have been more ups than downs, but they’ve had some ridiculously high peaks and some disturbingly low valleys. They have the offense to contend for a World Series, but can they trade for an entire pitching staff over the course of the next four weeks?”
The question BR has is the same one the organization their fans have, too. Will their pitching be enough? Unfortunately, the Cubs have suffered some serious injuries to their pitching staff, and need to add multiple arms ahead of the MLB trade deadline in order to have a realistic shot of making a deep postseason run.
