The Chicago Cubs, at 50-40, are in a position to be buyers at the deadline. This is a good thing in more ways than one. Not only is a National League playoff spot within their grasp, but they are in this position despite the plethora of injuries suffered to their pitching staff.
In other words, if Chicago could just field a healthy starting rotation and keep their best bullpen pitchers healthy, they are one of the best teams in baseball. Even though they have not been able to do either, they are still right in the mix.
And with the MLB trade deadline coming up, there are any number of pitchers they could look into adding.

While there are multiple perennial All-Star pitchers that could be available on the trading block, the Cubs may be more interested in acquiring a pitcher who is younger and has more years of club control left. Such is the case of Jose Soriano, whom ESPN believes would fit in nicely with Chicago:
“Since starting the season by giving up one run in his first 37⅔ innings, Soriano has posted an ERA approaching 5.00. The stuff still really plays, and plenty of organizations believe they can help work out the control kinks that can plague Soriano.
“Add to that the two years of control and the same pitching-hungry organizations that want Detmers — contenders and teams that intend to contend in the coming years — will be interested in Soriano.”
The only issue with Soriano and his potential for being traded is that he does have those two years of club control left. Los Angeles may be more inclined to keep him. Still, they are stuck in a perpetual rebuild and the Cubs may be able to convince them to send him to Chicago for the right package of prospects.
Soriano, overall, is 8-5 with a 3.42 ERA so far this year. More importantly, at least for the Cubs, he has been healthy.
