Caleb Wilson already earning praise for his Summer League performance

Caleb Wilson’s NBA Summer League is officially in the books and it’s safe to say that the rookie impressed. After the Bulls took Wilson No. 4 overall, the hope is that they found a super star. And the early returns are good.

Wilson played in four of the Bulls’ five Summer League games this past 10 days, putting on an impressive performance. He finished with 35 points in his debut and managed to score double figures in each of the rest of the games. For Wilson, he’s off to a great start and he’s already earning some praise from the national media.

Following the conclusion of the NBA Summer League on Sunday night, ESPN’s Ben Golliver wrote on his superlatives for the event. For Wilson, he named him the “most exciting rookie” of the event:

No player generated more buzz in Las Vegas than Wilson, who poured his heart into the event after his one-and-done season at the University of North Carolina was cut short by a right thumb injury.

Wilson, 20, performed like an athlete forced to bottle up his energy and competitive juices for the past five months. In between monster two-handed slams, he blocked shots at the rim, pushed the ball in transition, threaded 40-foot bounce passes on the run and showed off his improved three-point shot. While the 6-foot-9 Wilson seems like a natural fit at power forward, it’s possible that he’s quick and versatile enough to also function as an oversize wing.

The most eye-popping aspect of Wilson’s game is his leaping ability: He gets off the ground faster, skies higher and levitates longer than his opponents. No wonder Kevin Garnett, the former teenage sensation turned Hall of Famer, sat courtside last Thursday to get a look at Wilson.

Wilson was able to average 23.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 2.5 blocks per game in his four starts. Those are big numbers for Summer League, and it’s a great start for Wilson.

While we are a long ways until the 2026-27 NBA season, this is certainly intriguing for the future of the Bulls. Now, they just have to hope they have the right pieces on the roster to get this rebuild to speed up.
