With Caleb Williams’ hamstring strain keeping him week-to-week, backup Tyson Bagent was in line to start against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3. However, Bagent’s status is now murky as well, as he is dealing with a concussion.

The quarterback must now pass all steps of the NFL’s concussion protocol to see the field on Monday Night Football. It is a meticulous procedure, meaning Bagent won’t have much time despite the added day of preparation.

If Bagent can’t go, third-stringer Case Keenum would be in line to start. Keenum offers far more experience, but Bagent was signed to a two-year contract extension for moments like this.

The Bears will be carefully monitoring their backup quarterback’s status throughout the week. But at least on Friday, there was room for a bit more optimism.

On Wednesday, Bagent wasn’t able to be inside the confines of Halas Hall as he worked through the protocol. But he was able to at least pass that phase and was inside the building again on Friday, via Devan Kaney of FOX Chicago.

“Press Taylor says Tyson Bagent is in the building today,” Kaney wrote. “Bagent was not present last time media was at Halas Hall on Wednesday.”

While being at Halas Hall is a good first step, the real story is whether or not Bagent will practice on Friday. Chicago’s injury report will be heavily monitored for Bagent’s return.

It’s important to note that Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray was in a similar situation in Week 2. He was able to practice, but was ultimately ruled out. Of course, Chicago is in a different situation completely with Bagent already being the second option. But a practice return doesn’t guarantee Bagent on the field in Week 3.

Still, the Bears would rather see that happen than not. They remain hopeful their backup will be ready to suit up for MNF. If not, Keenum will be making one of the more improbable starts of the 2026 season.
